In this article, we will explore the partnership between Mnambithi TVET College and NSFAS, highlighting how this collaboration opens doors for students to pursue their educational aspirations.

What is NSFAS?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government entity that provides financial assistance to eligible students to cover their tuition fees, accommodation, and learning material expenses. NSFAS aims to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have equal opportunities to access higher education.

Applying for NSFAS at Mnambithi TVET College: How much is the NSFAS allowance for TVET students?

Students enrolled or planning to enrol at Mnambithi TVET College can apply for NSFAS funding through the official NSFAS online application portal. The application process typically opens during a specific period each year. Prospective students are encouraged to monitor the NSFAS and Mnambithi TVET College websites for announcements regarding application dates and requirements.

Online applications (www.nsfas.org.za) from the beginning of August to the end of November each year:

  • Communication is through cell phone, applicants are advised to keep their cell phones.
  • NSFAS call centre number 0860 067 327.
  • Applicants will need to create a myNSFAS account before starting the application process. If you are already funded by NSFAS for the current year and will be continuing with your funded qualification, you must not apply again. You are funded for the duration of your course provided you pass.
  • To be approved for NSFAS funding the applicant’s household income must be R350 000 per year or less. Applicants with a disability must be from a household earning a combined income of R600 000 or less per year.
  • NSFAS funding covers the cost of academic registration, tuition, books, transport, accommodation and personal care. NSFAS provides additional support to students with a disability such as wheelchairs, and special computer devices.
  • Once the applicant is approved for NSFAS Funding and admission to an institution of higher learning is confirmed, the NSFAS beneficiary will not be required to pay any registration fees.
  • NSFAS communicates funding decisions to students prior to the beginning of the academic year.
  • Remember to apply for Admission. Applying for NSFAS funding does not secure your admission to a university or TVET college. Apply for admission during the institution’s admission application period.
  • You need to have passed Grade 9 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a TVET College and Grade 12 to receive funding to study at a TVET college.
  • NSFAS has a right to reject or not consider applications by persons who did not meet all required criteria

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for NSFAS funding, students must meet certain criteria, including being a South African citizen, having a combined household income within a specified threshold, and enrolling in an accredited program at an approved institution such as Mnambithi TVET College. The specific eligibility requirements may vary each year, so it is important to refer to the latest information provided by NSFAS.

  • The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has been established to assist students who have the potential to enrol in NCV & Report 191 studies, but would not be able to do so without financial aid.
  • Any South African citizen who is currently studying or plans on studying at a public TVET College.
  • The combined household income of the applicant who has registered at a public institution from the current year or plans to register in the following year for the first time must not exceed R350 000 per annum.
  • The combined household income of an applicant who has registered prior to 2018 must not exceed R122 000 per annum.
  • The combined household income of persons with disabilities must not exceed R600 000 per annum.

Required Documentation:

When applying for NSFAS at Mnambithi TVET College, students will need to gather and submit various supporting documents. These may include their South African ID or birth certificate, proof of income for their parent(s) or guardian(s), academic transcripts, proof of registration, and a completed consent form. It is crucial to ensure that all required documentation is accurate and up to date to avoid delays in the application process.

Evaluation and Funding Allocation:

Once the application period has closed, NSFAS evaluates all received applications to determine eligibility and allocate funding based on available resources. Successful applicants will be notified of their funding status and the amount awarded. It is important to note that NSFAS funding may cover tuition fees, allowances for accommodation and living expenses, as well as additional learning material allowances, depending on the specific circumstances of the applicant.

Continued NSFAS Support:

NSFAS funding is not a one-time occurrence. Recipients are required to meet specific academic performance criteria to maintain their funding throughout their studies. It is essential for students to familiarize themselves with the terms and conditions of NSFAS funding, including academic progress requirements and any reporting obligations, to ensure continued support.

IMPORTANT: Students enrolling for NC(V) programmes are required to pay 25% of their fees on registration. However, students who provisionally qualify for a bursary will be exempted to pay this deposit.  Students’ guardians/parents who do not pay their full class fees during registration will need to sign a contract to pay the outstanding fees for their programme, according to college requirements and deadlines, and not rely on receiving a bursary.  Bursary funds are limited and awarded according to strict pre-determined criteria. Students who do not receive bursaries will be liable for their own outstanding student accounts.

Mnambithi TVET College’s collaboration with NSFAS opens doors to higher education for students who require financial assistance. Through this partnership, eligible students have the opportunity to pursue their educational goals at Mnambithi TVET College with the support of NSFAS funding. By applying for NSFAS and meeting the necessary criteria, students can access financial aid that covers tuition fees, accommodation, and learning material expenses. This collaboration highlights the commitment of Mnambithi TVET College and NSFAS to empowering students and ensuring equal access to education for all. APPLY NOW
