As the 2026 academic year approaches, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges across South Africa are opening their online applications, providing students with a valuable opportunity to pursue practical, career-focused education. For many prospective students, one of the biggest challenges is the cost of further education. Fortunately, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) continues to provide funding support to qualifying students, making it possible for thousands to access quality education without financial strain.

The online application process for 2026 is mapped to be simple and accessible, allowing applicants to apply from the comfort of their own homes. With the support of NSFAS, students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds can cover tuition fees, accommodation, transport, and learning materials, relieving the burden and allowing them to focus on their studies.

To apply for NSFAS funding, applicants must meet certain requirements, including household income limits and academic eligibility. It is important to gather all necessary documents before starting the application to ensure a smooth process.

Who Can Petition For NSFAS?

A student whose application for financial aid is rejected or the financial aid for a continuing student is withdrawn may petition the NSFAS.

• The appeal decisions are subject to budget availability.
• The petition will only be considered for students who have applied to NSFAS for Financial Aid.

Who cannot Petition for NSFAS?

Students are not permitted to appeal if they:

• Are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not fund;
• They have reached N+2 (or N+3 in the case of students with disabilities).
• The student is a gap year student who NSFAS previously denied financial aid to because s/he did not meet the academic eligibility criteria.
• If the institution has not submitted its registration record to NSFAS or has submitted an incorrect registration record, such enquiries should be directed to the institution.

Application Cycles

National Certificate Vocation (NC(v)), Semester 1 and Trimester 1 – Annual – online application and walk-in assistive capture application at the beginning of each year, Trimester 2 & 3 as per DHET calendar, in May and September respectively, also Walk-in assistive capture application, Semester 2 June – July walk-in, assistive capture application.

Who Is Qualified To Apply For NSFAS

• Only South African citizens are qualified for this bursary scheme.
• A student must be registered or intending to register on a PLP, NC(V) or Report 191 programme at any of the fifty (50) public TVET Colleges in South Africa;
• Must need financial assistance (NSFAS will determine whether or not a student meets the financial qualification criteria);
• Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance (academically deserving) in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher);
• Must not be enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded; and
• Applicants will qualify if they fall within the maximum threshold of up to R350,000 of combined gross family income per annum and have been admitted/received a firm offer for enrolment in a College.

• Engineering Studies – (National Certificate -Vocational) NQF levels 2-4 & Engineering studies – Report 191 N1-N6
• Engineering and Related Design; Electrical Infrastructure; Civil Engineering, Construction, and Information Technology & Computer Science
• Business & Utility Studies (National Certificate – Vocational) NQF levels 2-4 & Report 191 N1-N6
• Management; Marketing; Finance; Office Administration; Economics & Accounting; Education & Development; Hospitality; Tourism; Safety in Society and Transport & Logistics
• Pre-Learning Programme (PLP) funding through NSFAS
