This college is a merger of the former Durban Technical College, Swinton Road Technical College and Umlazi Technical College. It includes former Umbumbulu and Appelsbosch Colleges of Education. It is the largest College in KwaZulu-Natal, currently averaging about 15 000 full time equivalents and about 800 staff members.  Coastal KZN TVET College catchment area is from Ozwathini to South of Durban and continues for a strip of about 80km towards the South Coast. It includes Maphumulo, Stanger, Ndwedwe, the Bluff area, Chatsworth, Lamontville, Umlazi, KwaMakhutha, Isipingo, Amanzimtoti, Illovo right down to Scottburgh, but due to the residence facilities we have students from all over the country. The Central Administration Office of the College is at KwaMakhutha, which is a semi-rural setting. This College is well known for catering for adult learners, unemployed and employed by local industry, out of school youth, project linked trainees ranging from learners with a low academic background to those who have had opportunities to enhance their educational level.

TVET Colleges Registration documents to attach when applying to Coastal TVET College
During registration the following documents must be available:

  • A certified copy of the latest school results
  • A certified copy of the Identity Document
  • Necessary registration fee
  • Proof of residence

Nated (Report 191): Which TVET colleges are in Durban?

NATED programmes are delivered under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training and quality assured by Umalusi. These programmes are offered in both Engineering and Business Studies. Engineering is offered as trimester courses (3 months per level) and Business Studies as semester courses (6 months per level).

NOTE: A National Diploma (M+3) qualification is awarded to students who have completed their N6 in a specific field and have completed a relevant 24 month in-service training with the organization of their choice.

Engineering Studies

  • Entry requirement: N3 or Grade 12 with Maths and Physical Science as a passed subject,
  • Registration: January, May & September.

Business Studies

  • Entry requirement: N3 or Grade 12
  • Registration: January & July.

Business Studies N4 – N6

  • Nated: Financial Management
  • Nated: Human Resource Management
  • Nated: Management Assistant
  • Nated: Marketing Management
  • Nated: Public Management
  • Nated: Tourism

Engineering Studies N1 – N6

  • Nated: Civil Engineering
  • Nated: Electrical Engineering
  • Nated: Mechanical Engineering
  • Nated: Multi Disciplinary Drawing Office Practice / Draughting

National Certificate Vocational (NCV)

Which subjects make up a NCV?
A s student is required to take 7 subjects for each level

3 Fundamental Subjects (Level 2 – 4)

  3. Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy

4 Vocational Subjects (Level 2 – 4)

General Studies
