Which Universities Are Open For Application In 2026?

As the 2026 academic year approaches, several South African public universities have already opened their doors to new applicants. The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and several others, like the University of KwaZulu‑Natal (UKZN), University of Zululand (Unizulu), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), and Durban University of Technology (DUT), are now actively accepting applications, giving early birds a head start in securing their academic futures.

Meanwhile, major institutions such as University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape (UWC), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (UP), Nelson Mandela University (NMU), Central University of Technology (CUT), University of Limpopo (UL), Walter Sisulu University (WSU), Durban University of Technology (DUT), and University of Fort Hare (UFH) have also opened their application portals, with openings ranging from early April to mid‑May 2026.

For example, UCT began accepting 2026 applications on 2 April 2025, with a general closing date of 31 July 2025, while Stellenbosch University opened on 1 April, also closing on 31 July.
UP opened on 1 or 2 April, with deadlines of 31 May for veterinary science and 30 June for most other faculties. UJ opened on 1 April, closing on 1 October. CUT launched on 13 May, closing 30 September. UNISA starts later, with applications opening on 1 September 2025 and closing on 1 January 2026
